SICKLE CELL ANEMIA – DISEASE

An inherited blood disorder most prevalent amongst Africans (however, affects all races) is caused by a production of abnormal hemoglobin. The red blood cells in sickle cell disease form an abnormal “C” crescent whereas healthy red blood cells are flexible – able to move freely through the tiniest blood vessels. Hemoglobin of a person diagnosed with Sickle Cell Disease, sickle in shape causing irregular blood cells to die at a premature rate which results in severe shortage of red blood cells. Thus, cells that sickle restrict and block the normal flow of blood which can lead to excruciating pain, infections, stroke, acute chest syndrome, organ damage and premature death.
